The design of this watch commemorates 140 years since the beginnings of Seiko Watch Corporation, as a watch and clock repair shop in Ginza, Tokyo in Japan.
The striking ‘paved’ dial pattern is inspired by the very first Western style stone street paving areas in Ginza – urban changes which spread as the area and the country as a whole began to prosper.
The blue-grey ‘Konparu-iro’ dial colour represents both today’s Ginza area – reflections of the sky in the sophisticated glass cityscape – as well as being one of Japan’s cultural colours. It is a shade which first became fashionable in the 1910s and 20s – a trend which began in Ginza, when new chemical colour dyes began to be imported.
This watch style and shape is inspired by the original Seiko ‘Alpinist,’ first launched in 1959 exclusively in the Japanese market for Japanese ‘Yama-otoko’ mountain men, to be reliable in treacherous terrain.
Designed for practicality, this latest version is powered by the Automatic 6R movement with highly visible lumibrite on the dial and hands – easy to see in any light.
Prospex is a combination of the words ‘Professional’ and ‘Specifications.’ These timepieces are designed to be practical, reliable and durable within extreme or everyday environments, for experts, sports lovers and adventure seekers alike.
It is limited to just 3,500 pieces worldwide.
The Seiko Prospex 1959 Alpinist Reinterpretation 60s ‘Ginza’ 140th Anniversary SPB259J1 features a stainless steel case that measures 40.8mm in diameter and 12.9mm in height. The case has been treated to a brushed finish, which provides the watch with a refined lustre. It is equipped with a fixed bezel that has been treated to a polished finish. It also features a screw-down crown at 3 o’clock and domed sapphire crystal bestowing the watch with a vintage feel. Sapphire crystal glass is also used for the case’s see-through screw down case back.
The design of the dial is inspired by the traditional cobblestoned streets of Ginza, but with a touch of modernity which is imparted through the soft blue-grey tones that evoke the contemporary feel of many buildings seen in Ginza today. Uniting heritage and modernity, capturing the essential characteristics of Seiko. The intricate design incorporates two different sunray designs, which create an ever-changing textured impression that captures the true feel of Ginza’s cobblestoned streets.
The dial is adorned with beautifully applied markers that are characteristic of the 1959 Alpinist Reinterpretation collection. They are filled with a luminescent material, which enables the dial to be read in the dark. The dial continues to pay homage to the district’s history through the seconds hand which is presented in Komparu, a traditional Japanese colour named after Komparu Street, where Ginza’s nightlife was once centred. A date-display window with a silver frame is present next to the 3 o’clock marker. The Seiko logo is presented in silver beneath the 12 o’clock marker.
